Big KRIT’s “King Pt. 2”

Unfortunately, conscious rapping is very near to it’s death. Back in the 90’s, it strived through Pac, Nas, KRS-One, and, quite frankly, most of the popular rappers. Now, the conscious raps are dwindling down, near to extinction. Sure a few artists are keeping it alive: Nas is still going, Lupe Fiasco is always good for a worldly rap, and Phonte is one of the best at this stuff. But most rappers take the materialistic route these days (i.e. Young Money). However, Big K.R.I.T.’s latest song is a great example of modern conscious rap.

The only King Remembered in Time drops bars about the injustices of the hood, the “trash” on T.V., religion, and more, over the Just Blaze-produced Drake track “Lord Knows” beat. It’s ironic that he gives us this conscious rap over one of the best mainstream beats. The second lines of the song says it best:

“The same game they claim they killing, I’m breathing life in that”

Big K.R.I.T. Album Pre-Order

Big K.R.I.T. is, to put it simply, keeping that black soul alive. The mixtape he dropped last year, Return of 4Eva*, was better than most albums recently released. So, if that’s his mixtape material, I can’t wait to hear his album material.

Especially considering that K.R.I.T. is offering, via his website, a pre-ordered autographed album along with a shirt for under $50. An album that is sure to be a classic, autographed by a potential legend, with a T-Shirt, for the price of a video game. I’ll take that. Check out the pre-order opportunity here. The album, titled “4Eva and a Day”, drops March 5th.

“I’m On”

Trae tha Truth is on his DJ Khaled flow: getting a bunch of rap’s superstars to hop on his tracks and make hits, and boy does it work. Back at the start of July 2011, Trae dropped “I’m On”, a song with a catchy sample over a smooth beat with a special treat: verses from Lupe Fiasco, Big Boi, Wale, Wiz Khalifa, and Trae himself. And every single verse is legit. I had it on repeat for a month or more.

Then, about a week ago, the song was revisted by Trae, Big K.R.I.T., Jadakiss, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, B.o.B, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, and Bun B. Some dirty south, West Coast, Cole World, YMCMB, and UGK on the same song. And it may be even better than the original.

Hey, when Gudda has a good verse, you know you got a good song on your hands….
